1. You never get a 2nd chance to make a first impression. Non-verbal
cues can set the tone for an interview. There is no need to break someone's hand but a firm handshake is always nice. Relax, smile when appropriate, and don't speak too quickly.
If the interview is a phone interview, use this to your advantage. The interviewer cannot see your expressions but your tone and attitude can project
confidence and enthusiasm. have study sheets ready but be careful, an experienced recruiter can tell when you are reading from a paper or stalling to find the right answer.
2. Be prepared for your interview. A good candidate will find out as
much as possible about their prospective employer prior to the interview. Researching the company and the position will create a much more productive interview for you and your recruiter.
3. Dress professionally. By dressing professionally you will show
your recruiter that you mean business. If the interview is a phone intereview, then you lucked out.
4. It never hurts to arrive a bit early. By giving yourself a little
extra time, you avoid the possibility of being late. Recruiters remember the people who were late not the excuses that follow. If for some unavoidable reason you are going to be late, call ahead. Give yourself time
to sit and relax for a few minutes.
5. Listen to the interviewer. If the interviewer takes the time to
tell you something, it probably means it is important enough for you to take note. You will also be able to better answer questions and gage responses by listening effectively.
6. Don't be afraid to ask questions. By asking insightful questions
you will be able to better learn about the company you are interviewing
with. Your recruiter will also know that you are truly interested in what he/she has to offer. Feel free to takes notes on key issues. There is nothing wrong with writing down any additional questions that you might not want to forget.
7. Ask yourself some probing questions. By asking yourself some deep
questions you will be better prepared to answer the recruiters questions. What do you really want to do with your life? Do you want to live near the home of the World Champion Chicago Bulls? Where do you see
yourself in 5 years?
8. Bring extra copies of your resume and references. You never know when a recruiter might ask for one just to see if you've got it.
9. Don't chew gum. 4 out of 5 recruiters recommend it! (See Interview Tip # 1)
10. Have a positive attitude. People do business with people they
like. You've worked hard to get where you are. Be proud of your accomplishments and confident about what you will accomplish in the future.
